Culling

Even snails can show genetic variation. Here we see three snails. Two of which are pink with white shells one is brownish red.

Cull shrimp is as important as keeping them alive. Culling is a term we use in the aquarist world in which we get rid of by either killing off or moving unwanted traits from the gene pools of the organisms we breed. For shrimp and snails we cull for mostly for color. I cull my shrimp according to color and I desire the darker blue trait in my shrimp.

You can see multiple shrimp in this picture and they come in multiple different shades of blue. Though I do not consider all of these culls, the light blue ones are less desired on the market.
In this picture you can see two shrimp next to each other. Both are of the same species but one is nearly clear and the other is dark blue. the clear one is considered a cull.

    Hi Bryan!
This was really interesting. I’ve heard of “culling” before, but only ever on farms and the like. I didn’t know it was a thing among aquarists as well! I’ve also never seen dark blue shrimp before, and I see why it could be desirable. It’s a shame the lighter blue ones are less desirable though 😦
